Olympic Fortnight.

This week is the start of the first of our Olympic Fortnights. This is two weeks of work where all our learning has an Olympic theme.

We are taking this unique opportunity to enhance the children’s learning by giving them experiences related to the Olympics.

We begin on Monday with our very own Liss Junior School opening ceremony.

Our fortnight of work focuses on the Olympic value of respect. We will explore what this word means and how we show respect in our everyday lives. We will come up with our own definition of respect in the classroom.

We will be looking at our Olympic heroes, who they are, what they do and why we admire them. We will look at Eric Liddell and discuss what he had to give up to achieve what he did.

We will look at the countries that have hosted the Olympic Games in the past and produce fact files on them.

Homework

Monday -          Design a poster advertising the London Olympics.

 Tuesday -         Education City activities.

Friday -            Topic based activities.

Popcorn Prize!

April 19, 2012

On Monday 16th April Leila, Phoebe, Oliver and Sam received a letter and a parcel from Mrs Olivia Harrison, the widow of former Beatle George Harrison. Olivia was extremely pleased to hear about the fantastic popcorn sales we had made over the course of a week during January.  All the money that we raised went to UNICEF, which is a charity the Harrisons favoured and rose millions of pound for.

Inside the parcel the children found, to their exceptional delight, four Beatles hoodies, four notebooks of the same design and a pen, which would have been Mr Stanley’s if he hadn’t kindly forfeited it to a draw which Leila won.

We hope to hear from Mrs Harrison again, and once again we thank the parents and pupils of Liss Junior School for buying our popcorn.

Scarecrow Festival Poster Design Winner

March 26, 2012

Earlier this term pupils were invited to design an Olympic scarecrow to be used to advertise the Liss Olympic Scarecrow Festival.

Lots of entries were received and the festival committee had great fun time picking the  overall winner. However they all agreed that Kate’s design captured the essence of an Olympic scarecrow whilst at the same time presenting a strong clear image.  Kate’s scarecrow design was then sent off to be printed as a poster.

Every child at both Liss Infant and Junior school will take home a copy of the poster advertising the festival and we look forward to seeing the posters displayed all around the village.
