Cricket Champs

The Liss Junior Cricket Team returned with silverware yesterday after
winning the Spirit of Cricket trophy at the local cricket festival in Alton
Yesterday. The team, ably captained by Dylan Grimes, got off to a good
start against Anstey in the first group game by restricting them to 229 off
their 8 overs. Sensible batting ensured the target was reached with some
comfort. The second game against Bentley saw another good bowling
performance restrict the defending champions to 257. However regular
wickets fell throughout the Liss innings as the pressure of the run chase
proved too much.

The team finished second in the group which meant they moved into the
second tier Spirit of Cricket tournament. The semi final opponents were St
Lawrence's. Accurate bowling by Andrew Miles and Henry Green meant that St
Lawrence lost wickets at regular intervals and Liss capitalised on this
reaching the target of 230 with ease.

The pressure was cranked up for the final against a big hitting St Mary's
Bentworth team. Liss got off to a good start with some tight bowling, but
the Bentworth middle order took 18 off one over with a couple of sixes to
boot. Liss were set a target of 236 to win. Sensible batting was the order
of the day as the team closed in on the target until Archie Cains got a
couple of good deliveries leaving 23 needed off the last two overs. Enter
the captain! Dylan did a remarkable good impression of Chris Gayle smashing
sixes all over the park and calling for quick singles with George Davy.
Although Bentworth put down one difficult chance Liss eventually scored 241
and collected some silverware.

The team was: Dylan Grimes, George Davy, Archie Cains, George Glazier,
Andrew Miles, Henry Green, Peter Nichols, Charlie Bevan & James Upfield.
Special thanks to Mrs Davy for helping with transport and providing the
team with chocolate brownies!
